It forms a framework of aluminum and silicon tetrahedra (AlO₄ and SiO₄) linked together in a cage-like structure. Inside those cages: Sodium ions sit for balance. Chloride ions are trapped — which is unusual for silicate minerals. That trapped chlorine is part of what makes sodalite special.
