Turquoise is an opaque, blue-to-green mineral that is a hydrous phosphate of copper and aluminium, with the chemical formula CuAl 6(PO 4) 4(OH) 8·4H 2O. It is rare and valuable in finer grades and has been prized as a gemstone for millennia due to its hue.

Sodalite has a beautifully structured and unusual chemistry.
🧪 Chemical Formula
Na₈(Al₆Si₆O₂₄)Cl₂
Let’s break that down:
Na = Sodium
Al = Aluminum
Si = Silicon
O = Oxygen
Cl = Chlorine
Sodalite belongs to the feldspathoid group.
It forms a framework of aluminum and silicon tetrahedra (AlO₄ and SiO₄) linked together in a cage-like structure.
Inside those cages:
Sodium ions sit for balance.
Chloride ions are trapped — which is unusual for silicate minerals.
That trapped chlorine is part of what makes sodalite special.

The autumn tones (reds, yellows, browns, oranges) come from iron impurities:

Hydrated iron oxides → yellow to golden hues (like goethite/limonite)
Even tiny amounts of iron can dramatically change the color.

Cleaning 400 kilograms of raw Spirit Quartz is a massive undertaking, but doing it in the dead of winter brings a whole new set of challenges!
In this episode, we tackle a huge batch of crystals from start to finish. After 10 full days sitting in cold oxalic acid baths under a weak winter sun, it’s finally time to unpack, powerwash, and inspect the results piece by piece. Did the acid do its job, or did the cold weather ruin the batch?

Crystal Hunting in South Africa's Backyards

Join us on a gemstone buying adventure to the famous Boekenhouthoek mining area in South Africa! We hit the road to source large, high-quality amethyst and quartz crystal clusters directly from the local miners.
We started the day with a few phone calls to set up meetings, but when we first arrived, the lack of volume had us worried. Thankfully, as the day progressed, word spread, and the stock just kept coming! From wheelbarrows and hand-carried parcels to loaded vehicles, the locals brought out some incredible pieces dug right out of their own backyards.
Did you know the Boekenhouthoek quartz rush actually started when someone dug a pit toilet and struck a massive vein of crystals? Now, families mine just meters from their doorsteps.
By the end of the day, we managed to secure half a load of spectacular clusters to keep our shop fully stocked! Our only major hurdle? A severe lack of packing material. It's going to be a nail-biting drive back, praying these fragile giants make it home without a scratch.

I had a 12-hour layover to see if it’s still the same city I remember. Spoiler alert: It’s even better, though the tropical heat and humidity are just as intense as ever! I haven’t been to Singapore in 26 years, and let me tell you—the city has transformed into something out of a sci-fi movie!
In this vlog, I’m maximizing every minute of my Singapore layover. I started my morning at the iconic Gardens by the Bay, wandering through the Supertree Grove before the midday sun hit. After exploring the city, I headed to Chinatown, where I was lucky enough to catch a traditional Lion Dance performance—a beautiful reminder of the culture that stays strong amidst all the new skyscrapers.

Be amazed as you see what it takes to turn raw, rugged rock into perfectly smooth, glass-like gemstones? In this video, we take you behind the scenes of a massive industrial lapidary operation to show you the exact journey of African Tiger's Eye from the crusher to the final polished product!
Here is the step-by-step breakdown of how we process these incredible minerals:
* *The Big Crush:* We start at the industrial crusher, breaking down a massive *20 tons of raw Tiger's Eye* into smaller, manageable sizes.
* *The 1.5-Ton Tumbler:* Using a forklift, the crushed stone is loaded into a huge *1.5-ton rotating barrel tumbler* along with silicon carbide grit. This beast runs continuously for *7 to 14 days* just to smooth down the sharpest edges!
* *The Deep Clean:* The stones are transferred to massive, modified cement mixers to be thoroughly washed *3 separate times*.
* *First Quality Control:* The washed stones hit the sorting tables, where the human eye takes over to hand-sort and discard any flawed material. Only the best stones make the cut.
* *The Fine Polish:* The selected high-quality material moves into vibrating tumblers—loaded with *600 kg* of stone each—where they run for another full week until they achieve a brilliant shine.
* *Final Inspection & Lock-In:* After one last wash, every single tumble is hand-checked a second time to ensure perfection. Finally, a light waxing treatment is applied to lock in that deep, signature Tiger's Eye flash forever.
