โœจ Howlite โ€“ A white stone streaked with gray veins โœจ Howlite โ€“ A white stone streaked with gray veins, Howlite is a borate mineral composed of calcium, boron, silicon, oxygen, and water (Caโ‚‚Bโ‚…SiOโ‚‰(OH)โ‚…ยทHโ‚‚O).
Gem silica is desert lightning captured in stone. Gem silica is desert lightning captured in stone.
At its heart itโ€™s SiOโ‚‚ โ€” pure silicon and oxygen woven into translucent chalcedony. But then copper slips in โ€” Cuยฒโบ โ€” and suddenly the stone ignites in electric blues and lagoon greens.
Silicon builds the crystal.
Oxygen holds the lattice.
Copper paints the sky inside it.
Simple chemistry.
Magnificent color. ๐Ÿ’ซ
Sodalite is the night sky carved into stone. Deep Sodalite is the night sky carved into stone.
Deep royal blue streaked with white like drifting clouds โ€” and under UV light, it can burst into a fiery orange glow, as if itโ€™s hiding a secret sunrise inside.
Calm in daylight.
Electric in the dark. โœจ
Sodalite has a beautifully structured and unusual chemistry.
๐Ÿงช Chemical Formula
Naโ‚ˆ(Alโ‚†Siโ‚†Oโ‚‚โ‚„)Clโ‚‚
Letโ€™s break that down:
Na = Sodium
Al = Aluminum
Si = Silicon
O = Oxygen
Cl = Chlorine
Sodalite belongs to the feldspathoid group.
It forms a framework of aluminum and silicon tetrahedra (AlOโ‚„ and SiOโ‚„) linked together in a cage-like structure.
Inside those cages:
Sodium ions sit for balance.
Chloride ions are trapped โ€” which is unusual for silicate minerals.
That trapped chlorine is part of what makes sodalite special.
Jasper in its autumn variety looks like the earth Jasper in its autumn variety looks like the earth decided to paint with fire.
Burnt orange, golden yellow, deep rust and forest brown swirl together like falling leaves caught in sunlight.
The autumn tones (reds, yellows, browns, oranges) come from iron impurities:
Iron oxides (Feยณโบ) โ†’ red and rust tones (like hematite)
Hydrated iron oxides โ†’ yellow to golden hues (like goethite/limonite)
Even tiny amounts of iron can dramatically change the color.
In Simple Terms:
Autumn Jasper =
Silicon dioxide + iron + time + pressure
Chemically minimal.
Geologically poetic. ๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿฅฐ

If your Nepheline syenite glows orange under UV light, the most likely minerals causing it are:
๐Ÿฅ‡ Most Common Cause: Sodalite
Very common in nepheline syenite.
Under UV (especially shortwave), it often fluoresces bright orange.
Even small patches can make the whole rock appear to glow.
๐Ÿฅˆ Also Possible: Calcite
Frequently fluoresces orange to reddish-orange.
Often appears in thin veins or small white patches inside the rock.

Did you know one of the world's most stunning chatoyant gemstones began its life as deadly blue asbestos? ๐Ÿ…โœจ Discover the fascinating geological transformation of Tigerโ€™s Eyeโ€”from hazardous crocidolite fibers deep underground to the gleaming, silky mineral loved by collectors worldwide.
๐Ÿ“Œ What Youโ€™ll Learn in This Video:
The Asbestos Origin: How toxic crocidolite (blue asbestos) acts as the fibrous template for Tiger's Eye.
Silicification & Pseudomorphism: How silica-rich fluids gradually replace amphibole fibers over millions of years while locking in that mesmerizing catโ€™s-eye "chatoyancy."
How the Colors Form:
๐Ÿ’™ Hawkโ€™s Eye (Blue): The original, un-oxidized stage where preserved crocidolite fibers retain their natural blue-gray hue beneath quartz.
๐Ÿ’› Golden Tigerโ€™s Eye: The iconic golden-brown shade created when iron within the fibers oxidizes into limonite during silica replacement.
โค๏ธ Bullโ€™s Eye (Red): The deep crimson hue formed when natural geothermal heat (or heat treatment) further oxidizes iron into hematite.
Safety & Handling: Why polished Tiger's Eye is completely safe to wear and display, and what precautions to take when cutting raw material.

Cleaning 400 kilograms of raw Spirit Quartz is a massive undertaking, but doing it in the dead of winter brings a whole new set of challenges!
In this episode, we tackle a huge batch of crystals from start to finish. After 10 full days sitting in cold oxalic acid baths under a weak winter sun, itโ€™s finally time to unpack, powerwash, and inspect the results piece by piece. Did the acid do its job, or did the cold weather ruin the batch?
Join me in the shop as we:
Powerwash away the heavy clay, sand, and dissolved iron rust ๐Ÿงผ
Test and inspect the cleaned Spirit Quartz under the shop lights ๐Ÿ”ฎ
Weld custom steel stands for some of our showcase pieces ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿญ
Assemble a handmade amethyst gemstone tree on a custom wire frame ๐ŸŒณ
Cut stone bases using the lapidary saw so the crystals stand tall โœ‚๏ธ
Sort the final batch by grade and show off the wins (and a few failures) ๐Ÿ’Ž

We just got back home with an epic 400 kg haul of raw quartz, but things took a wild turn fast!

I Destroyed My Brand New Drone Sourcing 400kg of Crystals! ๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿ’Ž
We made it back home from our trip to Boekenhouthoek with an unbelievable haul, but things took a turn fast!
Deciding to capture some epic B-roll of the stock, I sent up the new droneโ€”only to fly it directly into a fever tree on just its second flight. It went down like a brick and is completely destroyed!
Despite a heavy heart over the drone, the show must go on. Weโ€™ve unloaded between 350kg to 400kg of raw, uncleaned crystal clusters right at the washbay. The sheer variety and quality in this batch are incredible, and we can't wait to start the cleaning process.

See how these amazing spirit quartz are mined and sold at the source
Crystal Hunting in South Africa's Backyards
Join us on a gemstone buying adventure to the famous Boekenhouthoek mining area in South Africa! We hit the road to source large, high-quality amethyst and quartz crystal clusters directly from the local miners.
We started the day with a few phone calls to set up meetings, but when we first arrived, the lack of volume had us worried. Thankfully, as the day progressed, word spread, and the stock just kept coming! From wheelbarrows and hand-carried parcels to loaded vehicles, the locals brought out some incredible pieces dug right out of their own backyards.
Did you know the Boekenhouthoek quartz rush actually started when someone dug a pit toilet and struck a massive vein of crystals? Now, families mine just meters from their doorsteps.
By the end of the day, we managed to secure half a load of spectacular clusters to keep our shop fully stocked! Our only major hurdle? A severe lack of packing material. It's going to be a nail-biting drive back, praying these fragile giants make it home without a scratch.
