Description

What is Tiger’s Eye?

Tiger’s Eye is a chatoyant gemstone (meaning it shows a reflective, silky luster) made up of quartz intergrown with fibers of crocidolite that have been replaced by silica. The stone is famous for its shimmering “cat’s eye” effect, with golden, brown, and honey-colored bands that seem to move as the stone is turned in the light.

South African Tiger’s Eye

South Africa is one of the largest and most famous sources of Tiger’s Eye in the world. The deposits, especially in the Northern Cape region (near Griquatown and Prieska), produce some of the highest-quality material, known for its deep golden tones, sharp chatoyancy, and durability.

Characteristics of Tumbled Tiger’s Eye

  • Appearance: Smooth, polished surface that brings out the stone’s golden-brown banding and silky shimmer.

  • Colors: Rich golden yellows, chocolate browns, and sometimes reddish hues.

  • Durability: Hard (Mohs hardness of 6.5–7), making it ideal for jewelry, pocket stones, and decorative use.

  • Size: Tumbles range from small pocket stones to larger decorative pieces.

Uses

  • Decorative: Pocket stones, display bowls, mosaics, and carvings.

  • Jewelry: Set in pendants, bracelets, or rings.

  • Metaphysical: Believed to be a stone of protection, grounding, and courage. Many use it as a “confidence stone” or for balancing energies.

Why South African Tumbles?

  • Known for their exceptional polish and deep golden color.

  • Durable and long-lasting.

  • Sustainably mined and globally recognized as some of the best Tiger’s Eye available.
